Character Building Assemblies

Character building programs in our school system today heavily outweigh the curriculum on mathematics, science, and liberal arts. Why? Unlike the traditional classes, lesson on character building can define not only students’ academic careers, but truly their entire lives. The question becomes – How do we teach this subject to our young students?

First off, what should a character building program include? You’ll find many different answers to this question. But no matter what, the program must cover the following universally recognized six pillars of character:

1. Trustworthiness

2. Respect

3. Responsibility

4. Fairness

5. Caring

6. Citizenship

Secondly, teachers and professors must use the appropriate forum to teach these skills. A normal classroom setting is not the answer. Many schools teach similar “life-based” programs through assemblies. This allows them to bring in outside groups that will both entertain and educate. There has been a growth of extreme sports groups that specialize in teaching to kids. The lessons these groups present are offered in a way that kids enjoy. Character Building

Character is the combination of traits and qualities which distinguish the nature of a person. A man of character denotes a person who has moral face. He is known and respected for his ethical qualities. He enjoys a good reputation and values it more than anything else.

Character can be good, bad, stronger or weak. A man with strong character would rather die for his principles than make a compromise. People with good character are righteous people. They are honest, sincere, tolerant, compassionate and helpful. People are selfish, untruthful, dishonest, and untrustworthy lack character.

Character building is a long and slow process. It starts right from childhood and continues till adulthood. Character once formed is extremely difficult of change. Only men of character can be successful and respected. A characterless person can earn Wealth or become a senior official but he cannot earn the respect in the society. He is despised by all who comes in contact with him.

All the human beings are born same. They have a tender heart and a clean mind at the time of birth. The environment and training they receive at home shapes their character in the beginning. Later they go to school where they influenced by teachers and friends. Initial years at place of work also effect’s a man’s thought process. By now the character building exercise is almost complete and the person becomes an asset or menace to the society.

Men of character are courageous people for they have the courage to be honest. To stand by your beliefs and perform your duties sincerely too requires courage, they often have to face situations where they are required to move away from their beliefs. They boldly refuse to do so, even at the risk of annoying their loved ones.

All the great men have a strong character. They were not born with it but they built it and it is showed in their actions. Socrates, the great Greek philosopher, believed that knowledge is for everybody. The others of his era believed otherwise and condemned him to death.
